Learning Climate – SSR Findings

Strength AreasGrowth Areas
The school is very welcoming. Small class sizes lead to personalized education for every student. Students feel that they are able to talk to their peers, their teachers, and their school leaders with ease. Any concerns that students or families have are addressed in a timely manner and discipline is consistent. School leaders are visible throughout the building regularly.  There is evidence of strong relationships between students, teachers, and families. School-led community events are making a comeback in the district which is a huge benefit to the community (e.g., sporting events, prom, homecoming, e-sports, etc.).At the moment, the district is working on gaining more community involvement, but still lacks evidence of a strong involvement from the community.
Students report that they feel safe in the building. Younger students are confused about the need to “stay calm” during incidents. Perhaps some more training for younger students to understand the procedures around safety protocols would help them feel safer. SRP posters are in place throughout the building. However, no explicit crisis plan was mentioned (i.e., reunification plan, etc.).
Secondary students feel that their voices are listened to and their recommendations are taken and initiated if relevant. School pride is present throughout the building and ingrained in school events (e.g., students “signing on” with the district, Wild Cat time- Advisory/SEL classes, Big Cat Little Cat, Profile of a Graduate, etc.) The district is currently working on gaining more community involvement, but the district is trying some initiatives like tech classes for parents, math nights, and painting with parent nights, etc. Minimal student work was displayed throughout the building and there was an absence of student driven learning while in classroom observations.
Small class sizes are a benefit to the ability of students being able to focus on the lesson being presented.Although PD has been presented on learning strategies which showcases evidence of commitment, goals are not established consistently with very little evidence of students reflecting on their goals.
It would be beneficial for learning objectives and DOL to be posted in the classroom and communicated to students while making a real world connection to provide relevancy to students
